Weeks Air Museum, Miami, FL
The Wings Over Miami Air Museum is on the Tamiami Airport at in S.W. Miami. It is worth leaving the beaches long enough to see these magnificent old airplanes in flying condition! The admission is nominal but expect to stay the day -- at least the afternoon. My favorite is this two-seat training TP-40N. This plane is very rare. There were only a few built by the manufacturer although several were made in the field to serve the training purposes.

From the display plaque: This is the trainer variant of the famous P-40 "Warhawk." During several of the production runs of the P-40, 5 to 10 of these two seaters were produced. They were used primarily as trainers and squadron "hacks." A total of 40 of these two-place "Warhawks" were produced. The example here (on right-above) is an "N" version previously owned by Frank Tallman and Tallman Aviation. It was used in the movie "Death Chase" and "Tora, Tora, Tora." This aircraft is the only factory built dual-control P-40 left in existence. Much effort is being spent restoring this aircraft to it's original
flying condition. Stages in the process of restoration can be observed
as the museum director, staff, and volunteers bring this aircraft to
completion. |
