Have you ever flown
a F6F before?
Hellcats & Corsairs
Since we three were qualified
in both the Hellcat and Corsair, they didn't hesitate to assign
us to fly either

This was a real challenge as the two planes had different flying
characteristics. I remember the first time I was assigned to fly
the F6F after flying |
| the F4U exclusively since coming aboard.
One very dark morning I climbed into the cockpit of a Hellcat that
was sitting on the catapult, using a flashlight. I started looking
the instrument and controls over. The plane handler climbed up on
the wing and asked if everything was OK. I said I thought so but
would he please point out the bomb arming switch. He looked startled
and asked if I had ever flown the plane before. Got it all settled
and was catapulted off into the wild black yonder. |
