The Way We Were

Individual stories of the war years from the people who lived them. These stories are sometimes heroic, sometimes funny, sometimes poignant, or sometimes simply remembering things that should never be forgotten.

"DUTY, HONOR, COUNTRY"

These riveting words, expressed by General Douglas MacArthur during his Farewell Address to the US Military Academy at West Point May 12, 1962, describe a whole generation of men and women.

General Douglas MacArthur's amazing military career spanned two world wars, the Korean War and several smaller wars. He is considered by many to be America's most brilliant war-time general. His genius made him the most winning military leader in WWII and in Korea. His inspired governing of a defeated Japan is credited with Japan's quick and spectacular post-war recovery. These stirring words expressed his entire credo:

"The long gray line has never failed us. Were you to do so, a million ghosts in olive drab, in brown khaki, in blue and gray would rise from their white crosses, thundering those magic words: duty, honor, country."
